My husband and I are foster parents to an adorable 3 year old boy. He's been through so much in his short life, yet is developmentally on target, smart, and very sweet. Most of the time. Like all toddlers, he’s going through the "terrible twos" with a vengeance.
One Saturday, he spent the day with my cousin and her kids while I did an art show. I came by her house to pick him up and was regaled with stories of how well behaved he was, that he sat still through church and even took a two hour nap. So, why when I got there, he decided to have the meltdown of all meltdowns, I'll never know. But, it was so bad that I had to put him in timeout at her house and take away his favorite thing to do before bed, which was to watch the movie, Shrek (for the 3,000th time).
"We'll read a book instead," I said.
He screamed the whole way home. By the time we pulled in the driveway, I was on my last nerve.
I put him in his pajamas and had him pick out a book. He chose "The Kissing Hands" by Audrey Penn, which was given to us by the same cousin just the week before.
I opened the book to begin reading and was taken aback by the foreward. "The Kissing Hand is a story for any child who confronts a difficult situation and for the child within each of us who sometimes needs reassurance. A child entering….foster care...will find reassurance in these pages. Parents and others who care for children will find an unforgettable way of communicating the message that all of us most need to hear—you are loved."
That was a perfectly timed Godwink.
