Tom Chappell is a cab driver in Phoenix. He doesn't get lost very often, but one day a few months ago, he was a little late picking up his fare, Rita Van Loenen. And, Rita was not happy. In fact, she was downright cranky and she didn't care if she ever saw him again. She didn't even give him a tip. So, over the next few months, every time Rita called a cab, who do you think showed up at her house? Tom.

Tom's the type of guy that wants to learn as much as he can about why a person is the way they are (rather than take their attitude at face value). So, the fact that he was taking her to a medical building with Southwest Kidney Dialysis on the door made him pause. He started researching it and learned that it was draining her energy and probably a lot of the reason she was miserable. What she really needed was a kidney transplant, but none of her family and friends was a match. Tom offered to get tested. Rita was so touched by his offer that her stone demeanor cracked. When he actually went through with it, she was blown away. And, when the test results came back, they were both in awe. If it had been any closer of a match, they would be siblings. The surgery is scheduled for later this year. Another bonus from this gift is that Tom's daughter who he hasn't seen in 30 years (he and his wife divorced and she took the baby and vanished), contacted him after seeing the story on the local news. Part of the reason he felt compelled to donate his kidney to Rita was because he didn't really feel like he had a whole lot to live for. Now, they both have a good reason.
