Ken Gaub sat in the family motor coach lost in thought…pondering what to do. His son was driving….some where near Dayton. He and his family troupe of singers had crossed 50,000 miles on the back roads of America…entertaining at churches, and county fairs. Now, with rising costs, he wondered…should they just settle down somewhere?

“Where am I supposed to be, God?” were the words screaming inside Ken’s mind as his son pulled up to a country diner. “You coming home?” asked his wife as the kids scrambled from the vehicle.

“No…I think I’ll take a walk,” said Ken.

There was not much to the village. The diner and a gas station was about it. As he walked past a gas station phone booth, he heard it ring. He stopped. Nobody there. He started to walk, then had second thoughts. What if it’s for the station attendant? He lifted the phone. “Hello.” An operator’s voice, “Person to person call for Mr. Ken Gaub.”

Ken blinked. “What??” “A call for Mr. Ken Gaub?” Ken looked around for the Candid Camera cameras. “Is this a joke?” “Are you Ken Gaub?” “Yes.”

At that moment a woman’s voice, bordering on tears, was in the background. “I believe that’s him operator.” The woman said, “Mr. Gaub, you don’t know me. My name is Millie. I saw you on TV and…” Sobbing the woman continued…” I didn’t know who else to call…I’m desperate…I thought you could help me.”

For the next ten minutes Ken Gaub counseled Millie…assuring her that taking her own life was a permanent solution to a temporary problem.…the answer was in turning to God…after all, he reasoned…the Almighty had already led her to him. “By the way,” he asked, “how did you get this number?” “I don’t know it just came to me. Is this your office?” Ken smiled…and promised that they would reconnect.

One mathematician calculated that call as a ten million to one chance.
