Over the last year, I have been searching for a cross to wear as a symbol of my faith. I have looked at jewely stores, on eBay, on craigslist, at Sam's Club and at T.J. Maxx - you get the picture. I could not find exactly what I wanted. I dreamed of finding a simple cross with stong lines - no stones and nothing fancy.
On April 15, 2009, I was thinking about my Grandmother. Her birthday was coming up on April 17. I think about her around her birthday every year even though she has been dead since Mother's Day 1972. She was a dear, dear person to me and my younger brother. That's when I realized that I wanted a cross like the one Granny always wore. I hadn't thought about it or seen it in 37 years, but there was my answer. That is the cross I'd been seeking.
On Friday, Granny's birthday, I decided I was finally ready to go through a box my sister-in-law gave me. It was full of keepsakes belonging to my younger brother. He died on May 23, 2008.
When I opened the box, lying right there on top was my Grandmother's cross. It was like being hit over the head with a two-by-four Godwink! I fell on my knees crying in prayer and thanksgiving.
As for the rest of the story, my "new" cross is engraved with Granny's first name - Alice. And the little dents all over it came from my Mother when she was cutting teeth.
God is with us.
