In 1978, I was divorced after 8 short years of marriage. I was devastated and hurt by this marriage. I decided I did not need a man in my life to make me complete. I attempted to throw myself into my work and accomplish other life goals I had set for myself. For the next 12 years, I dated off and on but nothing serious. I decided it was finally time to look for love again, but I didn't want to make the same mistakes I made the first time, so I decided to pray about it.

It was now August 1991 and I'd still had no luck finding the man of my dreams. I was discussing my lack of success with a very dear friend of mine. I told her how I consistently prayed for a mate with the qualities I was looking for. She told me I needed to stop telling God which qualities I would accept in a man. After giving it much thought I decided she could be right. Maybe a man with only those qualities was not out there. I decided to completely surrender my situation over to God. I trusted him completely to know what I needed as a perfect mate. I began praying just that. Lord you know me best and your will be done.

In September 1991, my friend Norma called and asked me to attend a singles event at her church. I explained I had other plans and would not be able to go with her. A few minutes after hanging up the phone, I received a call from my other friend canceling our plans. I called Norma and told her I could go to the singles event with her after all. When we got there, she told me how glad she was that I could come. She had met a gentleman last week and she wanted to introduce him to me. She said as soon as she met him, she thought of me. I found that unusual because she was a widow and was looking for a mate herself. As we entered the room, Howard was standing nearby. We approached him and Norma introduced us.

I immediately felt an inner peace and “just knew” he was the one God had sent for me. We spent the evening together and promised to meet at the singles event the following week. We continued to meet at the singles events for the next month. We became good friends. We had our first "real date" at the end of October 1991. We got engaged in December, 1991 and were married in February, 1992. Everyone asks how this all happened so quickly. We simply say "God slammed us together in a way there would be no doubt it was him at work in our relationship."

We have been happily married for a little over 18 years. God has blessed us immensely. We also realized we were both praying for the same thing (a mate) at the same time. I thank our heavenly Father every day for sending me what he felt I needed and not what I wanted. What he sent me far surpassed what I was asking for.
