My dad loved to pitch horse shoes. We would set them up in his alley and pitch at family gatherings. He gave his set to me when I got married and had a place to set them up. We continued to pitch horse shoes after the gatherings were at my home. After my dad died, this set was and is one of my cherished possessions.

Early one Spring, I set up the horseshoes in my back yard and would many times pitch them by myself. Unfortunately, I lost one of the shoes. (must have been a bad toss?) I searched all summer for that shoe, and even after a family "human chain", many weeks of mowing that area of the yard it was not found. Each time I would carefully look for that lost horse shoe. Needless to say, I did not get the chance to pitch any horse shoes all summer.

August came, as did my only daughter’s wedding. The wedding was beautiful, and the following day we were having family over to watch the bride and groom open gifts. Prior to the gathering, my daughter called me to say that she had dreamed about my dad that night, and she really felt as though he was there.

As the family gathered, my youngest sister, who was there from out of town presented me with a gift, a new set of horse shoes. I was happy to get them, and took my sledge hammer and went out to set them up where the old set had been. I walked to the area to pound the first stake into the ground, and there sat my long lost horse shoe, laying right on top of what was now grass.

I guess my daughter’s dream was right, my dad was there and he let us know it.
