Every two years, JD went to his village in India to get married but returned empty handed to Canada, his new home.
One year felt different, though, as if this was the year he might meet the right girl. He went to meet his college principal who was also a mentor for him. The principal took out a few applications of girl students from the only college in the village. He gave these forms to him, to try his luck and meet the families, but turned over the last form and kept it on the side.
"The last one is probably the best, I will save it for now, first go check these ones out" he said. JD was confused, but
out of respect, never questioned his teacher. He took the forms and left.
After a series of disappointing meetings, he got ready to return to Canada and come back in the next two years.
While partying with his friends, he learned about another “available girl" in the village.
He went to see her family. As he entered the house, he saw a group of girls sitting together and laughing. His eye caught Harminder’s and he made up his mind that she was “the one".
At the same time, Harminder joked to her friends, "It seems this new guy has come from abroad, he is going to uproot a local girl and take her far away."
JD married Harminder in a quiet ceremony. Before returning to Canada he went to pay respects to his teachers. When he went to his college principal’s office, he told him about the marriage. The principal asked who he got married to.
“Harminder", Jagtar replied. The principal looked shocked. The form he had turned upside down was still lying on the desk. He showed it to JD; it was Harminder’s admission form. It was JD’s turn to look shocked.
"I had a feeling that this would be the perfect match for you, but something held back from handing it to you right then. You were destined to find your soulmate on your own."
Jagtar and Harminder Dhaliwal are settled in Vancouver BC and have a 22 year old son, Ryan.
